Resource Efficiency
Background
A resource is typically in the form of materials, energy, services, staff, or other assets that are utilised to produce benefit, and in the process may be consumed or made unavailable. The benefits of resource utilization may include increased wealth, meeting needs and/or wants, or proper functioning of a system. As a result, organisations need to be economically sustainable as they utilise their resources to generate benefits from them; and at the same time, organisations need to be environmentally sustainable. There exist a need for any organisation, either it be private or publicly owned to earn an adequate return while satisfying stakeholder requirements, and this has to be done whilst understanding the wider business environment and social impact. Resources have three main characteristics: usefulness, limited availability, and potential for depletion or consumption. As a result, resource planning through proper management is key in maximising these resources for competitive advantage.
